Students and staff are getting into blogging. So I thought it would be fun to introduce a few of them. I'm not going to attempt to keep track of the myspace social bloggers (I think every computer in the computer lab automatically comes up to the myspace website) but here are some of the bloggers we see and work with. Note that many of their sites have pictures -- definitely a bonus for those who would like to scope out the landscape and the people.
Mac Alfonso is a gregarious PIBC student from Yap. Other students look to him for leadership -- and when they have computer problems. He's a guitar player and fun to be around.
Harald & Hannelore Gorges are Liebenzell Germany missionaries. Harold is the Liebenzell field director for Micronesia. He is also teaching a missions class this semester. If all of that were not enough they are remodeling the Liebenzell guest house on campus so that it will be a suitable residence for them.
Melissa Heck is a Liebenzell USA missionary who is serving as the dean of women. She is also a marriage and family counselor. Her undergrad degree is computer related and so sometimes if the two of us can put our heads together we can figure out some of the computer problems on campus. She does a lot of chauffeuring of students. Melissa, who has become a good friend, is a fun person to be around and brings joy into every room in which she enters -- unless it happens to be in the women's dorm in the middle of the night -- when students are being loud and rowdy. She is from the East Coast and probably gets more mail than anyone else on campus.
Happiness Lodge is a PIBC student with a great mind, a wry sense of humor, and a gift for preaching. He is a respected student leader. I can look to Happiness to interpret the student culture. He is from Chuuk, where his father is the campus director of the Tol campus.
Crystaleen Mikel is a PIBC graduate now on staff in the library. Crystaleen is Chuukese and has a great smile. She calls me "Boydston".
Dave Owen is the president of PIBC. Dave and his wife, Joyce, are Liebenzell USA missionaries. They are both from California. Dave was raised in Scotts Valley and we figure that our paths must have crossed several times over the years but we didn't actually meet until last year. They have become good friends. Cheryl and I lived with them when we first arrived on Guam.
Aaron & Hollie Schaub are popular on campus. Aaron flies rescue helicopters for the US Navy and is stationed on Guam. He has been known to fly over campus to get his wife's attention. Hollie wears numerous hats on campus -- all related to student ministries. She is from Oklahoma and he from Texas -- and amazingly they seem to get along quite well. Before marrying Aaron she was a youth minister in the States.
Peter Vaas is a Liebenzell Netherlands missionary. He is the facilities and maintenance director at PIBC. He is incredibly organized and at the same time flexible -- a perfect fit for this place. Peter is also a full-time student (that's how we got him to Guam -- on a student visa). He's in my preaching class and is an outstanding preacher in English -- and he's never even had the opportunity to preach in Dutch. He has a wonderful sense of humor.
