The infrastructure on Guam is very tenuous under normal circumstances. Power failures are a weekly occurrence. It's hard to get a mobile phone connection about half the time. The water just suddenly stops flowing. So you can imagine what all of these things do after a typhoon hits the island -- a fairly regular occurrence. Things go from bad to worse.
One way that PIBC is preparing for the next typhoon is with the development of a back-up water system.
If we don't have electricity we just all sit in the shade fanning ourselves. If we can't use the phones we rest our ears. But if we can't flush the toilets we have to close the campus.
This is why we're building a 4,000 gallon cistern to collect rainwater which can then be channeled into our on campus system.
This summer students and volunteers are working on the block structure which will sit behind the men's dorm.
There are other construction projects on campus, too. Take note of our new student center -- pictures #1 -- pictures #2. As usual, when you click on a picture it brings up a larger more detailed version of the same photo.
