Fusion

Someone from the mainland was asking me yesterday about the culture of Guam.

My best answer at this point is "FUSION." Guam is a fusion of Island, Asian, and American cultures. The Island factor is itself actually quite diverse. While there are some similarities it's not the same as Hawaiian Island culture. And there are marked differences between Chomoros (indigenous people of Guam) and Micronesians (indigenous people groups of the various Western Pacific islands -- all of which are strongly represented on Guam).

Most of our students at PIBC are Micronesians -- about 80% from Chuuk in the Federated Skits at fun-nightState of Micronesia (FSM).

I borrowed the picture here from Mac's Picture blog. The students had a fun night last evening. They love games, songs with motions, and SKITS -- lots and lots of funny skits. But even those skits are products of fusion. They've taken camp-style skits that were popular 30 or 40 years ago in the US and added their own unique elements and emphases.
